Jewellery store heist
On 3 June 1936, James Banfield and Harry Mason were tried at the Perth Supreme Court for breaking and entering and stealing. The pair smashed a plate glass window at Dunklings jewellery store in Hay Street and grabbed 18 diamond rings. Occurring in the early afternoon, the theft was hailed as a daring escapade, with several passers-by unsuccessfully trying to halt the pair, who escaped by motor car. Banfield and Mason were sentenced to five and four years imprisonment respectively.
