Clean-shirted rate collecter
On 14 July 1881, Walter Wilson was tried at the Melbourne General Sessions for embezzlement. It was alleged that Wilson, a rate-collector, had embezzled £1 8s from the St Kilda Borough Council received in payment from a rate-payer named Powell but not entered into the accounts book. The case fell apart after the Town Clerk admitted he could not say whether Wilson had handed over the money to him or not. Wilson was dismissed without a stain on his character.
