Vehicular manslaughter

On 27 January 1939, George Edgar Grantham was to be tried at the Perth Supreme Court for the manslaughter of 35-year-old Ernest Charles Okamoto. Okamotoa, a fisherman at Yunderup, died at the Pinjarra hospital from injuries he sustained after he was hit by Grantham’s utility truck while riding his bicycle along Mandurah Road. At the Coroner’s Court it was alleged that Grantham had been driving at high speed and in a negligent manner. Such vehicular deaths were becoming an increasingly common issue heard by the courts during the 1930s. In this case, however, the Crown decided not to proceed with the case, entering a nolle prosequi.
