Dismissal leads to destruction

On 20 January 1908, John Henry Clements was tried at the Rockhampton District Court for willfully and unlawfully destroying property. His former employee, John Stover, alleged that Clements had fired him and then thrown his belongings into the yard. Several of his gramophone records, worth around £4 10s, were broken. The low value of the property in question meant the case could have been tried summarily at the police court, but Clements insisted on a jury trial. This proved a successful strategy, as he was found not guilty and discharged.
